James Vernon Taylor is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who was born on March 12, 1948. Having won six Grammy Awards, Taylor was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. With over 100 million recordings sold worldwide, he is among the best-selling musicians of all time.

Following his No. 3 single "Fire and Rain" in 1970, Taylor's first No. 1 hit came the following year when he recorded Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" in 1971. Twelve million copies of his 1976 Greatest Hits album have been sold in the US alone, earning him a Diamond certification. For decades after the release of his 1977 album JT, he has continued to draw a sizable following. From 1977 till 2007, he released over a million copies of each record. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he experienced a comeback in chart performance, releasing some of his most acclaimed albums (Hourglass, October Road, and Covers). With the release of Before This World in the US, he got his first number-one album in 2015.

Taylor is well-known for both his original songs like "Sweet Baby James" and his renditions of songs like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and "Handy Man." He also starred in the lead role of Monte Hellman's 1971 film Two-Lane Blacktop.

Taylor was the 2006 MusiCares Person of the Year, sponsored by the Grammy Awards. Performers from a variety of ages honored Taylor with his songs during a black tie event in Los Angeles, frequently opening up on how much of an impact Taylor had on their choice to pursue music. The Chicks, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, Keith Urban, Jackie Browne, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and David Crosby are among the artists. Paul Simon also sang, though his performance was not seen on television; Livingston, Taylor's brother, joined him on stage as a "backup singer" for the last number, which also featured Taylor's twin boys, Rufus and Henry.

Now with 20 studio albums, Taylor continues to amaze his solid fanbase with his music also attracting the younger generations.
